Google MusicLM: Generate Your Own AI-Generated Music

In addition to the recent update to Google Bard and the exciting Generative AI experience in Search, Google made another significant announcement at the Google I/O 2023 event. They introduced MusicLM, an AI music generation model. Fortunately, we now have access to MusicLM, and in this article, we will explore its potential and capabilities through our tests and explanations. Google describes it as an experimental AI tool that can produce music based on the text you provide, albeit limited to just 20 seconds. Creating Music from Simple Text

Google has developed MusicLM, a text-to-music generation model, as part of its AI Test Kitchen program. This innovative model allows users to generate high-quality music by providing simple text descriptions, similar to giving it a prompt in natural language. The generated music by MusicLM has a higher sampling rate of 24kHz, resulting in audio that is rich in quality. Additionally, the AI-powered music generation process is lightning-fast, almost instantaneous.

To train the MusicLM AI model, Google utilized a dataset of 5,500 unique pieces of music created by sound artists from Google Arts and Culture Lab. These musical compositions were then enriched with detailed text descriptions by experts in the music field. Google has made this dataset, known as MusicCaps, publicly available to support future research endeavors.

With MusicLM, you can easily bring your own musical ideas to life using simple text prompts. If you have a concept in mind but struggle to articulate it precisely, MusicLM can fuel your imagination and produce the desired outcome. Currently, the model generates two tracks for each input, with a duration of up to 20 seconds. However, according to its research paper, MusicLM is capable of creating coherent music for as long as 5 minutes.

Generating AI Soundtracks

Now, let’s dive right in and discover how to utilize Google’s MusicLM for generating AI soundtracks.

1. Visit the Google MusicLM website and click on the “Get Started” button.

2. Click on “Register your interest” and join the waitlist. Don’t worry, approvals are happening instantly, so you won’t have to wait for long.

3. Sign in using your Google account, and voila! You now have immediate access to MusicLM.

4. Start by entering text descriptions to create your own music. For instance, I used the following prompt and got a pleasant, relaxing tune.

5. Then, I tried a different prompt to generate music for a workout session. It did a pretty decent job!

6. Feel free to experiment with longer prompts and more detailed descriptions. The results were quite impressive.

7. Additionally, you can even enter abstract prompts. Here’s an example from Salvador Dalí’s famous painting, The Persistence of Memory.

8. If you’re curious about how to get the samples mentioned above, downloading the AI music is a breeze. Simply click on the “three dots” icon next to the generated tracks, and from the menu that appears, select “Download.”

Initial Hands-on Experience

While exploring Google MusicLM, it became clear that it is still in its early stages as an AI music tool. Sometimes, it surprised me with its pleasant melodies, but often the generated music was just average. In Google’s official video, they showcased MusicLM creating impressive variations based on popular songs. However, in our testing, MusicLM failed to produce similar results.

This might be because Google hasn’t fully released the model yet, as it is still part of their experimental AI Test Kitchen program. In the future, there might be an option to upload your own humming audio and ask MusicLM to add a saxophone and create jazz music. I also tried requesting a fusion of Western rock and Indian classical music, but the output was not satisfying.

In summary, as an early demonstration, MusicLM is an exciting Google AI project for musicians. However, to make it truly exceptional, it will need a larger and higher-quality dataset, detailed text descriptions, and added capabilities such as the ability to upload your own music samples.
