Animation and Design in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse:

The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse started designing new characters in November 2019. Comic book artist Kris Anka worked as a character designer for the film. Production began in June 2020, according to lead animator Nick Kondo. The movie features different universes, each with a unique art style. The animation team used new tools to create six different animation styles. Each universe is designed to reflect its plot and create various emotional backdrops.

Gwen Stacy’s universe, Earth-65, was designed to look like “impressionistic” watercolor paintings. A simulator was created to generate this style, and a visual palette was used to reflect Gwen’s emotions. One of the alternate Earths seen in the trailer was Earth-50101, nicknamed “Manhattan,” based on the world from Gotham Entertainment Group’s Spider-Man: India comic book series. The other was Nueva York, a futuristic New York City from the Marvel 2099 world. The animation team used neo-futurist illustrations by Syd Mead to create an unfinished look.

Miles’s design was updated for the sequel to show him having gone through a growth spurt, while Gwen was given a new haircut and an updated costume. Rick Leonardi and Brian Stelfreeze, co-creators of Spider-Man 2099, and Jessica Drew, respectively, worked on adapting their own designs for the film.

The Spot’s design evolves throughout the film as he gains more control of his abilities. The Spot’s portals were intended to look like “living ink that had spilled or splattered on the comic artist’s drawing.” The Vulture was given a Renaissance-era design inspired by the artwork of Leonardo da Vinci’s workbooks.
